THE GOD OF THE OLD TESTAMENT
Part 5: The Covenants of Promise |
|
|
God progressively revealed His divine purpose through
a series of covenants. Each covenant deepened God’s relationship
with humanity and moved His plan of redemption closer to
fulfillment. The covenant with Noah was Jesus’ promise to never
again to destroy all life by flood and the rainbow in the sky was a
symbol of His mercy and faithfulness. The covenant with Abraham
promised him innumerable descendants and the land from Egypt to the
Euphrates. This was later reaffirmed with Isaac and Jacob as well.
The covenant with the nation of Israel on Mount Sinai expressed
Jesus’ holiness and His expectation of mankind’s conduct. It marked
Israel’s commitment to obey the Son of God and established them as
His chosen people. The previous covenants were made with
individuals, but Mount Sinai was decidedly different because it was
a covenant with an entire nation. |
